AFHA’s 2015 Darden Mill concert series continues with Eric & Suzy Thompson http://www.ericandsuzy.com/ who have been mainstays of the San Francisco Bay Area’s vibrant acoustic music scene. They have devoted their lives to the pursuit of obscure old-time American music – warped fiddle tunes in odd tunings, cinematic ballads, country blues songs containing mysterious metaphors, early Cajun music with incomprehensible French lyrics and backwards chords. And they’ve recently begun to write material that re-purposes some of these old sounds in brand news ways. Using fiddle, mandolin, guitars, Cajun accordion and the occasional odd instrument such as the ten-stringed cuatro, they bring these hundred-year-old sounds right into the present day.

Eric’s flatpicking on acoustic guitar and mandolin is exceptional for its purity of tone, speed, and soulfulness; Suzy is a powerful singer and award-winning fiddler who apprenticed with older Louisiana Cajun musicians under an NEA fellowship. They are founding members of many influential roots music groups including the Black Mountain Boys, Any Old Time, the Klezmorium, and the California Cajun Orchestra. In addition, Eric and Suzy have also worked with Maria Muldaur, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Jerry Garcia, Darol Anger, Laurie Lewis, Jody Stecher, Joel Savoy and many other fine musicians. Suzy is the Artistic Director of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, WA and also directs the Berkeley Old-Time Music Convention. Both Eric and Suzy have taught at many music camps including Alabama Folkschool, the Augusta Heritage Center, Lark in the Morning, Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and the Montana Fiddle Camp.
