The Helvetia Community Fair is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in West Virginia and one of the most traditional. Since 1914 it has brought the community together to celebrate the harvest and the Swiss heritage.

The Exhibits in the Community Hall reward fresh and canned produce, handicrafts, art, flower arrangements, fabrics, 4H projects, baked goods, and much more.

Bellringer in traditional dress and man with Swiss flag. The Alpine parade features traditional dress and vehicles. You may see a hand-pushed flower wagon and a cart pulled by Bernese Mountain Dogs–the emphasis is on the rural and traditional.

In the village meadow, the afternoon program features Swiss Folk Dancing & Singing, Alp horns, Yodeling, and Fahnenschwingen (Flag Swinging). Many of the performers are descendents of the original Swiss and German settlers. The dance and music have been handed down through the generations.

Fahnenschwingen (Flag Swinging)Regional crafters display and sell arts & crafts at the Star Band Hall, the Library sponsors a book sale, an antiques threshing machine may run in the Meadow, and traditional Swiss meals are found in the Hutte Restaurant. Carryout refreshments are available near the Exhibit Hall.

And, the Saturday Night Square Dance provides an active and fun evening with a family atmosphere. Residents ranging in age from newborn to their nineties join guests in the Community Hall. Helvetians are more than happy to help you learn square dancing, polkas, and waltzes.
