Black King Coal at the Irish Pub

August 26, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Allan Dale Sizemore
Black King Coal
West Virginia, born and bred.
Allan Dale Sizemore, also known professionally as Black King Coal, has been writing songs for almost 30 years. He wrote his first real song at the age of 14, as soon as learned 3 chords on his first guitar, an old Harmony acoustic that had a hole kicked in the back of it that his Uncle gave him from the trash. It was called “Where the Sky and Innocence Meet”. He learned then that you only needed 3 chords to write a decent song, maybe less.  Since then, he has gone on to write hundreds of songs, learned a few more chords (just in case), spent time in Nashville writing for Music Row until he realized that they weren’t really interested in good songs, just popular songs, fronted the first Americana Appalachian Stompgrass group Rust Kings, became a founding member of the Americana Music Association, had his songs featured as the national PBS Song Of The Week on All Songs Considered twice, scored a European Top 10 Bluegrass/Americana album (Rust Kings’ Hotel West Virginia) and been featured on the Merlefest Songwriters Stage. Not too bad for a boy from Trout Valley, WV, which has served as inspirational fodder for many of his songs, including the aforementioned first song.
Currently, Allan is the musical consultant/coordinator for the television show Barnwood Builders on DIY Network, which is debuting this fall and uses his musical compositions for 80% of the show’s background. He also is a member of The Wild Rumpus as well as Black King Coal, an Appalachian Soul group playing his compositions and songs he’s co-written with various songwriter friends and he also keeps a pretty busy solo schedule. His songwriting is varied in subject matter as well as style, from fingerpicked stories to full blues and soul, and whatever comes, he keeps an open mind.
The Irish Pub on Washington Street, or “The Pub,” as it’s know to locals, opened in Nov. 2006 and since then it has become an integral part of the community. As well as being a music venue and a bar, it is a community gathering place for myriad events ranging from benefits and fundraisers to Mardi Gras parties, wedding receptions (and even a wedding, once) to Pub Quiz Trivia night, or just a nice place to go of an evening for friendly faces and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It doesn’t hurt that the menu boasts over 110 different beers, 25 different Irish whiskeys (as well as the usual array of spirits in a full bar), and some tasty food! Patrick O’Flaherty, renowned Celtic musician, plays ThursdayMonday evenings, 4-8pm. He also makes the Pub’s famous Irish Stew, so be sure to have some when you stop in. Céad míle fáilte!
